Hypnosis for Anxiety Vs Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Our hypnosis for anxiety differs from conventional therapy for anxiety disorders. Usually, if you suffer from anxiety you tend to be offered medication in the first instance by your doctor and if that doesn’t work you are referred for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
CBT helps with rationalising your problem and arms you with some coping mechanisms to help with uncomfortable feelings BUT it doesn’t look at the root cause of your problem. Whilst CBT can be helpful for some people it doesn’t always resolve the underlying problems that can be at the heart of your anxiety which is where Clinical Hypnotherapy can make a difference.
Clinical hypnotherapy can help you to address problems with subconscious thought patterns that may be making your fears worse. In many cases, these subconscious thought patterns may have been with you since childhood. If these fears are not addressed you may never fully resolve your anxiety-related problems.
Why Do You Have Anxiety?
Anxiety is a very basic form of survival mechanism that your mind uses to keep you safe. It is there to protect you and to keep you alive not to hurt or harm you.
Anxiety issues tend to start when you are young, typically between the ages of 3 and 7 years old. Something happens to you to upset, scare or embarrass you and your brain learns a simple lesson that day. It never wants to feel those feelings again!
So now your mind starts to run a program to keep you away from the problem. Anytime you go anywhere near a similar situation it will start to give you feelings of anxiety or fear to make you head to a safe environment.
For some people, their anxiety is with them all the time as their anxiety trigger is always present whilst in others the anxiety will only appear in very specific situations.
The Fight or Flight Response
The feelings that you are given to keep you safe are known as the “fight or flight” response. They are messages from your subconscious mind to either run from the danger or fight the oncoming threat.
Adrenaline pumps into your body and as it does it causes physical symptoms such as a fast heart rate and quicker breathing. You may feel intense fear, panic or worry and your body may tremble or shake. These feelings can be incredibly frightening for our clients but we know that they are there to help warn you of a possible danger.
Your Brain Has Got Things Wrong
The only problem is that with anxiety your mind has usually got things wrong and it is in a way lying to you. This is because the lesson you learned as a child is usually no longer applies years later. With anxiety disorders, this means you are feeling feelings of danger when there is none present.
An illustration of this might be public speaking anxiety. Imagine that a small child is told off and embarrassed by a teacher in a class for getting something wrong as they recited something from a book. The child may have felt horrible at this moment in time and the anxious part of the brain would note that it wouldn’t want to talk out loud in public again.
Yet years later would you have the same reaction? As an adult, nobody is going to make you recite from a book or tell you off for your mistakes. There is no need to worry about tripping up over your words as it happens all the time even to the best newsreaders. Now you are perfectly capable of being a confident public speaker but your brain is still giving you the old message. This is where a clinical hypnotherapist can help to make a difference as they can help you to remember the old incident and rationalise it to help lower your anxiety.
There are of course exceptions to the rule but our anxiety hypnosis in Lincoln teaches you the other elements of anxiety you need to know.
The Other Elements of Anxiety and Fear
Whilst the past is very relevant to why your anxiety started it is only part of the story which is why our anxiety hypnosis in Lincoln takes a three-pronged approach to resolving the problem. The other important factors are your lifestyle and stress.
We all suffer from stress in our lives but when our levels get too high this can have a detrimental impact on our mental health and well-being. This is especially the case if the area where the stress is present reminds your mind of the anxiety triggers from the past.
At our hypnotherapy clinics, we know that teaching our clients stress management techniques is essential to resolving anxiety-related issues. If stress is allowed to progress unchecked it is inevitably going to have a knock-on effect on other areas of your life such as causing insomnia and sleep deprivation.
As well as helping our clients with stress we also look at lifestyle issues that could also be contributing to your problem. Late nights, alcohol, relationship problems and so on are going to have an impact on your well-being. This is why our anxiety program helps you to also make a positive change to your lifestyle.
The reason we get great results with our clients is that we know that only when you look at lifestyle, stress and past experiences does the conscious mind stop the feelings of anxiety.

Anxiety Therapy In Lincoln
Hypnosis is often the best solution for resolving problems with anxiety that haven’t been helped with traditional methods.
Hypnosis can be used to help anxiety in two main ways. Firstly the state of hypnosis itself is deeply relaxing and calming. When we guide a client into hypnosis they generally feel more peaceful, their heart rate slows down and they begin to drift into a much calmer state. When this form of hypnosis is practiced regularly it helps you with stress management.
We ask all our clients to practice self-hypnosis daily and give them an anxiety hypnosis audio to use in between sessions to increase the relaxing impact. Over time the person with anxiety should find that their general background levels of anxiety begin to reduce.*
When a person is in a trance state during hypnotherapy sessions it is also possible to tackle fears and phobias more easily. By exposing our clients to the problem that they fear we are able to lower their usual anxiety response.
For example, if a person has a fear of spiders we may start by placing them into hypnosis and then showing them a picture of a spider for just a second or two. As their stress response lessens we may then show the picture longer or introduce videos. Generally, the client will become more and more used to the problem that was creating the stress or panic response, and eventually, they will be able to see a real-life spider without the usual fear.*
Our anxiety hypnosis in Lincoln may also use analytical hypnotherapy. A qualified hypnotherapist may not always offer this form of therapy as it is more complex than standard suggestion hypnosis. We use analytical hypnotherapy as we know that for many of our clients the reasons for their anxiety or panic attacks are not always immediately obvious.
They are experiencing feelings of panic and fear but just can’t place their finger on where the problem may be coming from. In many cases even though consciously the person will not know where the issue came from the subconscious has the answer. By guiding our clients into a state of hypnosis and asking questions in many cases we are able to identify where the problem originates from. Once we understand the issue it is easier to create a therapy program aimed at the actual stressor .*
