Hypnosis for Pain management
Many people assume that when they are in pain it is a simple matter of seeing a doctor who will give them a tablet to make it go away but pain is much more complex than people think. Anyone with chronic pain will tell you that they will have tried the conventional approach but found that their pain still persists. This is because long term health conditions such as arthritis required a number of approaches to get results. Therefore people may be taking medication, seeing a physiotherapist and a complementary therapist such as a hypnotist. Our Hypnotherapy for pain in Newark and Grantham is designed to be of help when there is an emotional element linked with the pain or when the pain is increased by something such as muscle spasms.

The Different Types of Pain
Many people will experience short term pain after an operation or a medical problem. As an example if you fall over and break your leg the initial pain levels will be incredibly high but over a period of days the pain will begin to subside especially when you take painkillers.
Chronic pain however is a longer term condition where a person may suffer from the problem for weeks, months or even years. Both types of pain will involve painkillers especially at the start but with chronic pain there is usually the need for additional approaches to assist. Chronic pain for example often means that people start to experience anxiety or depression and the worse this is the higher their pain levels feel. This is where hypnosis for pain management can help as my lessening the worry and fear the lower the pain levels become.
Approaches to Pain
A holistic approach is usually needed when dealing with pain. That means help with pain management with medication, assistance for physical movement and also help with the psychological impact of the pain. Before we see our clients for pain management we usually ask them to consult their GP so that we get detailed information on what is causing the pain. This means that our approaches are never in conflict with your doctors advice.
Where possible and depending on the type of pain that we are working with gentle exercise should also be used to prevent muscle stiffness or weakness. Depending on a persons level of fitness this may mean an exercise such as walking, swimming or pilates. If regular exercise is not possible then we would look into the possibilty of physiotherapy to help. The extent of your physical exercise should be discussed with your doctor first to prevent further pain.

Psychological Reasons for Pain
When people are in pain especially over a long period of time their anxiety and stress levels rise. The higher the level of anxiety the higher their pain level feels. This then becomes a viscious cycle as they feel more pain and get more anxious and so they feel worse. Our hypnotherapy for pain in Newark and Grantham works by helping our clients to reduce this cycle.
Hypnosis for pain management can help to relax and to also distract a client from pain. In fact in some circumstances hypnotherapy can also be used as a form of anaesthesia. Whilst your body is incredibly relaxed and your mind wanders off into the hypnotic trance state the mucles tend to relax and anxiety and stress are reduced.
A clinical hypnotherapist can also teach you how to use self hypnosis to manage the pain whilst you are on your own. At our clinics we give our clients an audio recording that allows them to enter a state of deep relaxation. When this is played regularly it should lower stress and anxiety levels which in turn should reduce pain. You can find more details of our hypnosis for anxiety here.
Sleep and Pain
Another side effect of pain is its impact on sleeping patterns. In particular people who suffer from chronic pain may find it difficult to get a good nights sleep. Hypnosis can be used to help switch the mind off at night in turn allowing the body to relax. When people have better sleeping patterns they are able to think more rationally and feel less anxious and stressed.
