Orthorexia Hypnosis
The term Orthorexia is a relatively recent term created in 2007 by Dr Steven Bratman in relation to people who are obsessed wtih eating so called “clean”, “healthy” or “good” foods. So an orthorexic may fixate on eating fruit and vegetables and lean protein but frown on carbohydrates, sugar and fat. This does not mean that every person who eats healthy would be classed as having a problem but if that healthy eating turns into an obsession or begins to control their life then it potentially becomes a form of eating disorder. Our Hypnotherapy for Orthorexia programs are designed to help our clients understand why they feel the need to do this and help them to eat in a more balanced way.*
Orthorexia Symptoms
As with most eating disorders the food is just a symptom of another problem which needs to be addressed. In this case of this disorder the abnormal eating patterns tend to be created to deal with negative thoughts and feelings and the food is simply a way of exerting some control over these. Typical symptoms that an orthorexic may experience include:
- Anxiety, stress or guilt when eating outside their “clean” food regime.
- Removing more and more food groups from the diet.
- Obsessing over healthy eating.
- Following “clean” eaters on social media and obsessing over what they eat and how they look in comparison.
- Experiencing strong negative feelings when eating anything other than “pure” foods.
- Judging others for the way they eat.
- Limiting their social life and the places they go so they can keep control over their food.
Orthorexia Treatment with Hypnotherapy
Eating disorders tend to have some common underlying problems which we see regularly at our clinics. In particular our clients make experience problems with:
- Stress and Anxiety
- The need for Perfectionism
- Not feeling good enough
- A feeling of being alone
- Over dieting
In fact many of our clients first contact us for our weight loss programs which are entirely inappropriate for this form of eating. Weight loss hypnosis, slimming clubs, diet shakes all tend to increase the problem. This is why we have created a five session program to help our clients which involves no form of food restriction. Instead our sessions concentrate on helping our clients tackle the underlying emotions which they are trying to suppress whilst helping them to get back in tune with what their body actually needs. Our Hypnotherapy for Orthorexia sessions tend to take place one or two weeks apart so an average client is with us for around two months.*
