What Help is There for Anxiety?

Although the NICE guidelines (National Centre for Clinical Excellence) recommends some form of counselling as a first resort for the problem in many cases doctors tend to prescribe medication. Clearly this form of treatment is not without problems. In fact any form of medication is likely to create side effects which is why it is important to consider natural treatments for anxiety as well as prescription medication before making up your mind on a way forward.

Natural Anxiety Disorder Treatment

Generally when doctors discuss natural treatments for anxiety they are thinking about Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. This is a form of therapy that does not tend to look at the underlying cause of the problem but helps people by giving them tactics by which they can control their fears. This may involve helping the person to think in a realistic manner, teaching them breathing techniques to make they calmer or helping them face their fears with exposure therapy. This form of anxiety help can be useful for many people but it has its drawbacks as it never gets to the root cause of the problem meaning that in some cases a client never really gets to grips with the CBT program and the fear persists.

Anxiety counselling is not dissimilar to CBT and may help people to try and discover the reasons why they are suffering from the anxiety if it is not immediately obvious but there are still drawbacks for many people who feel clueless as to why they may have an issue. This means that they may talk all they want about their problems but never hit upon the reason for their anxiety.

Why Anxiety Hypnosis Should be Considered

Our Anxiety Treatment in Nottingham is different to both CBT and Counselling because we work with our clients to get to the very root cause of the problem if it isn’t known. Through a process of analytical hypnotherapy our aim is to get our clients into such a relaxed state that they are able to bring up the thoughts and feelings that are creating the fear or worry. From our experience many of the problems that our clients discuss with us are minor traumas or incidents that happened to them in childhood which they would never have connected to their fear no matter how long they had spent discussing it with a therapist. *

In addition hypnotherapy for anxiety is great at creating relaxation but much deeper than the muscle relaxation that a CBT therapist may use with you. At Balance Hypnotherapy we have even created our Ultimate Stop Anxiety Program to assist our clients with the main problems that they encounter with anxiety. This audio program is designed for a client to use in the comfort of their own home so that they can practice self hypnosis and switching off worries and negative thoughts. With regular practice this stop anxiety mp3 download can reduce background levels of anxiety considerably in a significant number of clients.*

Not all Anxiety is the Same

It is worth noting that not all forms of anxiety are the same and that the treatment for different forms of the problem may vary depending on the issue.

Panic Attacks Treatment – The first step in the process of resolving panic attacks is relaxation, distraction and acceptance. Breathing techniques, halting the attacks before it takes hold or accepting it once it starts can make a huge difference to the way a person perceives an attack. Once we are able to help a person control an attack we then tend to work on helping them discover why they are suffering from the problem.

OCD – CBT is one of the primary treatments for this problem but it can only halt the problem when the person with the fear or worry takes an active part in their therapy. For example many people with OCD fear contamination or wash their hands multiple times a day to alleviate anxiety. It is necessary for the person with the problem to agree to try and lengthen the times between each hand wash so that they start to see that the anxiety peaks and then reduces quite rapidly when nothing happens. Over time the times between each hand wash should lessen. Hypnotherapy for OCD can help with this process as we can teach relaxation techniques to our clients so that when they feel the anxiety rising they can enter a state of self hypnosis allowing them to face the fear.*

PTSD – With post traumatic stress disorder two techniques have been proven to be helpful. One is called EMDR and the other the rewind technique which actually comes from Neuro Linguistic Programming.

Fears and Phobias – As well as using hypnosis to help with a fear or a phobia we also use exposure therapy to lessen the fear. That means introducing our clients very slowly to the problem that they fear the most. So if they hate spiders we start by showing them pictures whilst they are in hypnosis, then videos and finally we get them to see a real spider or our stuffed spider.*
